Quality
|
Ever since its opening, Humanitas has adopted quality control systems based on the PDCA approach
(Plan Do Check Act), which summarises the virtuous circle of quality and makes it possible to
verify processes and outcomes in a continuous manner. Istituto Clinico Humanitas has always
compared itself with the best European hospitals and has taken part in various benchmarking
projects as a means of preparing itself to meet the challenge of the opening of the European Health
System.
It was this that led to the decision to
certify the hospital’s management model with the Joint Commission International, one of the world’s
most prestigious hospital certification bodies. The origin of this choice was the pilot experience
promoted by Lombardy’s Regional Government with a team of Joint Commission consultants aimed at
evaluating possible indicators of hospital quality at regional level. In December 2002, after
making its survey, the American Board of the Joint Commission recognised the validity of Humanitas’
organisational and quality control model with particular reference to the level of care (the
physician-nurse-management ratio at the service of patients), and the functional nature and
usability of its structure. Istituto Clinico Humanitas obtained its international certification as
a result of reaching the standards of accreditation with a score of absolute excellence. The Joint
Commission is one of the most advanced systems of quality certification for healthcare facilities:
it has accredited more than 17,000 in the United States, thus becoming the most important de facto
reference for defining healthcare facilities from the points of view of both patients and public
healthcare systems. |
